Scott Andrew Fulks was recently surprised by his colleagues during their virtual annual meeting with the 2023 Pro Bono Champion award by the Minnesota/Dakotas chapter of the American Immigration Lawyer’s Association.
Scott is an active volunteer in nearly all the nonprofit organizations in the Minnesota Dakotas chapter. He volunteers with the:
- Volunteer Lawyers Network (U visa adjustments, naturalization applications, and many defensive asylum applications)
- Immigration Law Center of Minnesota (DACA and naturalization)
- Advocates for Human Rights (BIA appeal, family-based adjustment of status, and federal court habeas petition) and
- Mid Minnesota Legal Aid (full-rep immigration court representation – asylum)
Pro bono work is important to Scott because it provides access to the full extent of the law for those who cannot afford it and likewise empowers them with confidence and determination that they are fulfilling their goals and objectives. The satisfaction he receives from pro bono work is observing the gratitude and joy from clients. Pro bono work is an opportunity to give with no expectation in return.
